The NMC, regulator for over 600,000 nurses and midwives working in UK, has announced the appointment of Jackie Smith as the new Director of its Fitness to Practise service.
Jackie Smith joins the NMC on 16 August, from the General Medical Council (GMC), where she is currently Assistant Director, GMC Liaison and also interim Head of Investigation.
The Director of Fitness to Practise is responsible for driving forward improvements and change to meet the NMC’s goal of safeguarding the health and wellbeing of the public. The Director also has specific lead responsibility for the overall performance of a Fitness to Practise department of over 100 staff, and ensuring service is delivered according to agreed targets.
Commenting on the announcement of Jackie Smith as the NMC’s new Director of Fitness to Practise, Professor Dickon Weir-Hughes, NMC Chief Executive and Registrar said:
“Jackie brings significant strategic experience and achievement from the GMC including the management of the unit which investigates complaints against doctors and delivering performance against targets. Her experience of working within a legislative framework and her track record of delivering continuous business improvement in an organisation of similar regulatory complexity will be a distinct advantage to the NMC”.
