The deaneries are responsible for the management and delivery of postgraduate medical education and for the continuing professional development of all doctors and dentists, including making sure that doctors and dentists are given adequate opportunity within training posts to realise their full potential and provide high quality patient care.
Much of the work of the deaneries focuses on work involving training, supervision and career management to improve patient care and support doctors, in particular:
- In conjunction with the medical universities and GMC, they have responsibility for ensuring posts and necessary training/supervision for Pre-Registration House Officers.
- They undertake regular hospital inspections to ensure educational contracts are being fulfilled.
- They are involved in the appointment of all Specialist Registrars and overall responsibility for SpR training in conjunction with the Royal Colleges.
- Generic type training courses for both trainers and trainees, covering areas such as Careers Guidance and How to Teach. Guidance and Management courses for trainees about to become consultants are also offered.
- Responsibility for Flexible Trainees.
- Advising Overseas Doctors and signing off applications for extensions of visas.
