Background to the Nursing and Midwifery Council

nursing and midwifery council

The Nursing and Midwifery Council maintains the register for nurses, midwifes and health visitors in the UK. In 2002 it replaced the UK Central Council for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting (UKCC). The NMC establishes standards of education, training, conduct and performance for nursing and midwifery and to ensure those standards are maintained, thereby safeguarding the health and wellbeing of the public.

The remit of the NMC is set out in the Nursing and Midwifery Order 2001 and other associated legislation. Their regulatory function is the power to investigate any complaint or information provided that may suggest a registrant is unfit to practice. They can then refer this matter for formal adjudication.
