Background to the Health Professions Council

Health Professionals Council

The Healthcare Professions Council describes their function as protecting the public by setting standards for training, education, behavior and health. They currently regulate 13 health professions and it is anticipated that following the Department of Health’s consultation, the HPC will regulate Hearing Aid Dispensers who are currently regulated by the Hearing Aid Council.

The current 13 professions are:

  • Arts therapists,
  • Biomedical scientists,
  • Chiropodists/podiatrists,
  • Clinical scientists,
  • Dietitians,
  • Occupational therapists,
  • Operating department practitioners,
  • Orthoptists,
  • Paramedics,
  • Physiotherapists,
  • Prosthetists/orthotists,
  • Radiographers, and
  • Speech and language therapists.
